Our users love PocketMD,
here’s what they say...

Bank grade security

with PocketMD
Data
Data
at rest

All datastores with customer data, in addition to S3 buckets, are encrypted at rest. Sensitive collections and tables also use row-level encryption. This means the data is encrypted even before it hits the database so that neither physical access, nor logical access to the database, is enough to read the most sensitive information.

Data
Data
in transit

PocketMD uses TLS 1.2 or higher everywhere data is transmitted over potentially insecure networks. We also use features such as HSTS (HTTP Strict Transport Security) to maximize the security of our data in transit. Server TLS keys and certificates are managed by AWS and deployed via Application Load Balancers.

Encryption Key
Encryption Key
Management

Encryption keys are managed via AWS Key Management System (KMS). KMS stores key material in Hardware Security Modules (HSMs), which prevents direct access by any individuals, including employees of Amazon and PocketMD. The keys stored in HSMs are used for encryption and decryption via Amazon’s KMS APIs. Application secrets are encrypted and stored securely via AWS Secrets Manager and Parameter Store, and access to these values is strictly limited.

Security
Certifications

PocketMD steadfastly upholds the rigorous standards of a SOC 2 Type II attestation and demonstrates unwavering compliance with both the Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act (PIPEDA) and the Personal Health Information Protection Act (PHIPA), thereby ensuring the utmost security and confidentiality of patient information.

Saving lives by giving physicians their time back.

PocketMD was born from a personal tragedy that could have been prevented. My mother, who complained of arm pain for over two years, was tragically misdiagnosed. Despite undergoing multiple ECGs, her underlying issue—clogged arteries—went undetected because she needed an angiogram, not more standard tests. One day, she suffered a massive heart attack and was clinically dead for a few seconds before paramedics revived her. The reality is that her physician, overwhelmed with administrative tasks, didn’t have the time to provide the thorough care she needed.

This experience revealed a critical flaw in the healthcare system: physicians are drowning in administrative burden, leaving less time for patient care. That’s why we started PocketMD—to give physicians their time back. Our platform has already helped benchmark an average of three hours saved per day per physician, allowing doctors to focus more on their patients. And this is just the beginning—we’re committed to making healthcare more efficient and life-saving for everyone.

You have questions? We have answers!

How does PocketMD save physicians time?
PocketMD has significantly improved workflows by integrating all necessary physician tools into a single application. For example, it automatically validates patient health cards when appointments are scheduled, eliminating the need for clinic staff to do so upon arrival. A study with Dr. Badawi highlighted that using PocketMD saved him 3 hours daily. Clinic staff are also freed from routine deskwork, allowing them to focus on patient care and doubling clinic appointment capacity. PocketMD's philosophy is that technology should adapt to providers, not the other way around.
I already have an EMR, can I still use PocketMD?
PocketMD yields the best results when all its features are used together. However, you can use PocketMD for one or many of its powerful features.
Can you transfer my existing EMR data to PocketMD?
Yes, once you are fully satisfied with our services. Let us know and we can transfer all your patient data into PocketMD.
Does PocketMD comply with Canadian privacy laws?
PocketMD is fully compliant with PHIPA and PIPEDA regulations, ensuring the highest standards of personal health information protection. Additionally, we are SOC 2 Type II certified, demonstrating our commitment to rigorous security and data privacy protocols.
How do giving records to patients benefit physicians?
There are various benefits to a physician including better patient engagement and outcomes, better satisfaction with providers, and less litigation with the added benefit of no additional strain on workflow, and improved workflow! Better Patient Outcomes and Satisfaction with Providers: In a study of over 21,000 patients, over 95% of patients from various educational and socioeconomic backgrounds reported understanding their notes well. In another study, those from underserved communities (eg older, non-white, less educated, unable to speak English) reported most likely to benefit from reading their notes including feeling in control of their care once they are able to read their notes. Less Litigation: Access to notes can help reduce litigation by reducing medical errors and building trust. Studies have shown that 21% of patients have pointed out medical errors in their profiles when given access to their notes. Of that, approximately 42% said the error was very serious or somewhat serious. In another study that looked at those who used open notes for at least a year, 24% of doctors reported a “serious” error was identified by patients. No strain on workflow: Of the more than 250 organizations that implemented a similar open notes platform in the US, none of them reported a significant increase in time spent with patients directly or via email. In fact, most of these organizations reported a decrease in email communication. This was attributed to patients resolving their confusion by reading their notes.
I have patients who suffer from mental health disorders, would I be able to exclude sharing the notes of these patients?
Although bringing transparency into mental health can spur clinicians' fears around sharing the notes with their patients, the literature suggests that transparency might yield fruitful opportunities. We encourage the physicians at PocketMD to become accustomed to sharing the notes with all their patients. We encourage them to describe the clinical findings in ways that exemplify collaborative, and judgmental assessment. This will in turn may help patients address their mental health issues more actively and reduce the stigma they experience. This also applies to patients who have substance abuse disorders or addictions of any kind.
